TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) แปลตรงตัวคือปริมาณของแข็งทั้งหมดที่ละลายในน้ำ ปกติวัดในหน่วยของ mg/L หรือ ppm เป็นค่าที่บอกได้ถึงความสะอาดของน้ำ สารละลาย หรือบอกได้แม้กระทั่งว่าน้ำนั้นควรจะเป็นน้ำเค็ม น้ำกร่อย หรือน้ำธรรมดา ซึ่งคำว่าของแข็งที่ละลายน้ำในความหมายนี้หมายถึง เกลือแร่ เช่น แคลเซียม ฟอสเฟต ไนเตรท โซเดียม โปแตสเซียม คลอไรด์ ฯลฯ หรือโลหะหนัก ไอออนบวก ไอออนลบ ทั้งนี้อยู่ในเงื่อนไขว่า สารเหล่านี้มีขนาดสามารถลอดกระดาษกรองขนาด 2 micrometerได้ ถ้าลอดกระดาษกรองในขนาดนี้ไม่ได้จะเรียกว่า ของแข็งแขวนลอยที่ละลายในน้ำ TSS(Total Suspended Solids) ซึ่งเป็นคนละค่ากัน ค่า TDS มีผลต่อสิ่งมีชีวิตและข้าวของเครื่องใช้ ค่า TDS ที่มากหรือน้อยเกินมีผลต่อการสูญเสียเกลือแร่ทางเหงือกของสัตว์น้ำที่ท่านเลี้ยงได้ ค่า TDS ที่มากเกินบอกถึงความเป็นน้ำกระด้างได้ อันสามารถส่งผลต่อระบบวาล์ว ไส้กรอง ซึ่งเป็นสาเหตุของการสึกหรอหรืออุดตัน ซึ่งจะเห็นได้ชัดในระบบสระว่ายน้ำ สปา ระบบกรองน้ำRO ฯลฯ ในเชิงของการวัดค่าความเค็ม ไม่เพียงแต่มิเตอร์วัดค่าความเค็มจะบอกถึงความเค็มของแหล่งน้ำได้เพียงอย่างเดียว มิเตอร์วัดค่า TDS นั้นอาจจะเป็นอีกตัวชี้วัดที่สามารถบอกได้เช่นกัน คือสำหรับน้ำจืดควรจะมีค่า TDS ที่ <1,500>5,000 mg/L โดยปกติ TDS มิเตอร์วัดค่าได้อย่างมาก 1999 ppm แต่มิเตอร์ของผมรุ่นนี้(TDS-6031)มันวัดได้มากถึง 19990 ppm เลย
